As of 2020, more than 28 million BELGIAN ID CARD 4SALE have been issued by Thales. The country initiated the BelPIC (Belgian Personal Identity Card Project) program in 2003 and successfully reached its objective of issuing cards to 100% of the population by the end of 2011. This credit card-sized document, made with polycarbonate material, serves as the official and mandatory identification for Belgian citizens aged 12 and above. Since 2014, the second generation of electronic ID cards has been rolled out and over 2 million are delivered each year. In November 2018, Home Affairs Minister Pieter De Crem’s cabinet announced that fingerprints would be added to ID cards by October 2019 in efforts to combat fraud. This measure is in line with a proposal from the European Union in April 2018 to strengthen the security of identity cards for Union citizens. The proposed regulation was approved by the European Parliament in April 2019 and ratified in June of the same year.
